Web App vs Website: Which Does Your Business Actually Need?

· 6 min read

The Question We Get Asked Most

Almost every new client comes to us with some version of this question: "We need a website — can you build it?" But after a few minutes of conversation, it often becomes clear that what they actually need is something quite different.

Understanding the distinction between a website and a web application can save you months of rework and thousands of dollars.

What Is a Website?

A website is primarily informational. It tells the world who you are, what you do, and why they should care. It's mostly static content — pages that don't change based on who's looking at them.

Examples:

  • Company homepage and about pages
  • Service landing pages
  • Blog and news sections
  • Contact forms

Websites are fast to build, easy to maintain, and excellent for SEO. If your goal is to be found online and convert visitors into leads, a well-built website is exactly what you need.

What Is a Web Application?

A web application does things. It takes input, processes it, and responds differently for different users. It often requires authentication, stores data, and has business logic running behind it.

Examples:

  • Customer portals and dashboards
  • Booking and scheduling systems
  • E-commerce platforms with accounts
  • Internal tools and admin systems

Web applications are more complex and more expensive to build — but they automate work, create recurring value, and can become a core part of how your business operates.

How to Decide

Ask yourself: Does this need to remember who I am?

If users need to log in, track their history, or interact with data that belongs to them — you need a web application.

If you're primarily publishing information and generating leads — a website will serve you better, faster, and cheaper.

The Hybrid Approach

Many businesses need both. A marketing website with an embedded web application — for example, a company site with a client portal — is a common and sensible architecture.

The key is to be intentional about which parts are which, so you don't over-engineer your marketing pages or under-build the parts that need to scale.
